MIDLAND PARK, N.J., August 23, 2018—The Midland Park Public Education Foundation (MPPEF) is dedicating its ‘5th Anniversary Midland Park 5K Run for Education’ on Saturday, September 15th, to Midland Park High School student Samuel ‘Sam’ Sullivan. Sam was just 16 years old when he passed away on February 6, 2018. He was a scholar-athlete at Midland Park High School where he ran cross country for MPHS and in the MP 5K each year. He was the “mayor” of any social event and loved greeting people with enthusiasm and a genuine interest in their lives.
In addition to the race being dedicated to Sam, an award will be given each year at the Midland Park 5K in honor of his memory. The ‘Sam Sullivan’ award will be bestowed upon the top male and female MPHS teams that finish the race.
“Sam was an inspiration to everyone in our community.’ said 5K Race Coordinator, Delmarie Alvarez. ‘He was such a great athlete. It was really exciting to watch him run in the 5K each year. Everyone in Midland Park misses him so much. It was very important for us to honor Sam’s memory by dedicating the race to him and creating a special award to honor his legacy.’
Proceeds from the event will go directly toward the funding of classroom, district and scholarship grants benefiting all of the students within the Midland Park Public School District.
Midland Park 5K race registration is currently open at www.mppef.org. In person registration will be available at bib pickup at the DePhillips Center on Friday night, September 14th from 4pm-9pm and on race day, Saturday, September 15th at 7:30 am. The 5th Anniversary Midland Park 5K Run for Education is USA Track & Field NJ Certified and kicks off at 9:00 a.m. at the DePhillips Center, 50 Dairy Street, Midland Park. All members of the Midland Park and surrounding communities are invited to join in the festivities.
“To date, the 5th Anniversary Midland Park 5K Run for Education has brought in over $21,000 in sponsorship money, thanks to the support of area businesses,” said Race
Sponsorship Chairperson, April Catuogno. “We are very appreciative of the support of
our sponsors. They’re making a difference in our community and raising funds for the students who attend the Midland Park School District.”
